The region of Tortola belongs to the most wonderful holiday destination in the Craibbean. This picturesque island is known for its astonishing and diverse landscape as well as turquoise waters which surround it. Moreover, it is a place, where the capital of the British Virgin Islands, Road Town, is located. Another advantage of the island is that it is not over-urbanized and thus has been able to retain its natural beauty and wilderness of the landscape. As Tortola is situated along Sir Francis Drake Channel, it is a wonderful start of a BVI island hopping experience. If you charter a yacht in one of Tortola’s many marinas, such as Parham Town or Road Town, you will be able to explore nearby islands, such as Cooper Island, Norman Island, Ginger Island or Salt Island but also these which are a bit farther off, such as Jost Van Dyke, Virgin Gorda or Anegada. Tortola remains its rural atmosphere; it is full of charming towns and villages where you can meet hospitable locals. You can find there mountain range, and many scenic hills, which make a perfect surrounding for hiking as well as horseback and bike riding. The highest peak of the island is called Mt. Sage, you can climb it in a beautiful scenery of Sage Mountain National Park. Tortola’s scenic bays and pristine waters of the Caribbean Sea are wonderful for watersports, you can find there many excellent diving and snorkeling spots, such as Smugglers Cove and Invisibles, where you can admire breathtaking aquatic environment, or The Chikuzen which is a great shipwreck dive site. Moreover, Tortola has many different places, where you can practice any other kinds of water sports, from paddling to kitesurfing. While exploring the island, visit Soper’s Hole Marina in the northern part of the island, a place famous for its vibrant nightlife, great shopping sites and excellent local restaurants. One of the greatest attractions on Tortola is Skyworld, a restaurant located at the top of the hill just outside Road Town. It is a place with excellent local cuisine and a breathtaking view of Sir Francis Drake Channel and many of its islands. The Dolphin Discovery, situated in the northern part of Tortola is a must-see as well. Here, you have a chance not only to admire these lovely creatures but also swim with them. Road Town itself is a place worth spending some time in. It is a cultural and business center of the entire BVI region. You can find there many interesting places, such as Virgin Island Folk Museum, where you can, for example, admire artifacts that come from shipwrecks as well as learn a lot about the local tradition and history. Make sure to visit the astonishing J.R. O’Neal Botanic Gardens which are located in the middle of the town. It is a perfect place for a relaxing walk among tropical greenery and exotic birds. As you may see Tortola is a place full of great attractions and spectacular views. And if you charter a yacht in one of its ports, exploration of this wonderful island can only be a beginning of your BVI hopping cruise.
