Description
St. Martin is the largest of the Dutch Windward Islands located in the Lesser Antilles archipelago. Besides the scenic landscapes, luxuriant nature and great architecture, the island offers you a great portion of entertainment that is externalized in duty-free shops and vibrant nightlife. Although the Dutch part is often considered to have more laid-back atmosphere, probably you will not be able to decide which half you liked best as both are equally charming and fascinating. The capital of the French side is located in the scenic city of Marigot. Marigot is known as a tax-free shopping bliss. It is full of luxury shops with clothes (even the majority of the top fashion designers have their boutiques here) and electronics. Some of these luxury brands can be found in the vast West Indies Shopping Mall and some impressively modernized Creole houses that can be found along rue Charles de Gaulle and rue de la République. However, do not forget to step by Marigot Market, where local products are sold. You can find there anything from fresh fruits and seafood to handmade goods, such as pottery and jewelry. In the Port La Royale Marina, you will find many excellent local restaurants and cafes. While exploring the French side, do not forget to visit a scenic town called Grand Case, climb the Paradise Peak and admire the city panorama from Fort St. Louis. The landscape of the French part of St. Martin is hilly and rural with many scenic hiking and biking trails. However, you can also fin here some wonderful beaches, such as vibrant Orient Bay. The Dutch side of the St. Martin is, or rather used to be, more popular among tourists and thus its landscape is more industrialized. However, it does not mean that you will not find there a beautiful nature and great hiking trails. This place is a real paradise for sunbathers and watersports’ lovers. If you’re the one, you should visit the spectacular Simpson Bay, its sandy beach and blue lagoon, which is the largest in the entire Caribbean. And then, wait for the spectacular sunset. Other wonderful beaches in this part of St. Martin are Cupecoy, Maho and Mullet. Mullet Bay has an excellent snorkeling sites and Maho is a center of entertainment with all the casinos and clubs. The capital, Philipsburg is a charming town and similarly to Marigot, a duty-free shopping paradise. The region of St. Martin is full of charming islands and islets known for picturesque bays surrounded by high hills. Thus the best way to discover all these beautiful places and landscapes is by a chartered boat. It gives you endless travelling possibilities and independence in planning your holiday.
