Description
The essence of Greece When we think of a holiday destination connected to the sea, when we expect to spend time actively, for example sunbathing, scuba-diving, snorkelling or sailing, when we want to witness the endlessness of the open water in a warm, relaxing climate, a country that immediately comes to mind is, undoubtedly, Greece. With innumerable ports along its seashore, with a collection of islands, every of which has its own aura and Mediterranean glamour, with the history of deep union with the ocean, it has ruled the Aegean Sea ever since the first signs of human civilisation became visible. But even if we limit ourselves to Greece in terms of searching for a place to spend our holiday in, the range of possibilities may seem rather overwhelming. What to choose? Sunbathing on the sandy beaches of the Cyclades? Hiring a yacht in one of the Dodecanese’s boat rentals? Relishing the peace and quiet of secluded Ionian Isles? Visiting thought provoking, historical sites of Crete? Or maybe wandering around astounding forests of the Greek mainland? Fortunately, there is a simple answer that provides the quintessence of all that Greece is famous and loved for. The answer that is only twelve kilometres long and six kilometres wide. The island of Skiathos, one of the Northern Sporades, lies east of the Pelion peninsula. Close proximity to the Greek mainland makes it very easy to get there, which is something we recommend wholeheartedly. The surface of Skiathos is covered with wonderful, picturesque forests, which makes the island a wonderful place for those who enjoy exploring on foot. Despite its rather unimpressive size, there are more than fifty sandy beaches on the island. Some exceptional historical monuments, such as the Medieval and Byzantine Castle or Old Monastery of Panaghia Ekonistria, will definitely draw the attention of those interested in the ancient times. Finally, the size of Skiathos its actually its biggest advantage – it avoids crowds that are a plague to more renowned Greek islands. All these factors would not be so impressive, hadn’t it been for what binds them all together – sailing opportunities. With its marinas and yacht charter points, Skiathos is a perfect starting point for anyone willing to take up the quest of discovering the northern waters of the Aegean Sea on their own. Renting a boat opens a wide range of options in front of the adventurer who decides to take the challenge. Admiring Skiathos from the sea gives a completely new perspective, it enables you to admire its wonders at their finest. What’s more, we can pay a visit to other Sporades, such as Skopelos or Skyros. We may also experience the beauty of the sea in National Marine Park located not very far east of Skiathos. Nothing stops us from taking a cruise in an opposite direction and exploring the tricky waters of Greek bays and harbours between the mainland and the long island of Euboea. To cut a long story short, if you want to witness a real Mediterranean experience, if you wish to feel a truly Greek vibe, if long for an independent, eye-opening and unforgettable event, come to Skiathos, rent a boat, and let the tides be your guide. |
