Description
Corsica – Perfect Holiday Destination Corsica is an island on the Mediterranean Sea that belongs to France. It is a perfect region for sailing and one of the best in the western Mediterranean. There are so many attractive places to visit that you should plan the trip for at least two weeks just to see the most important spots. Plenty of the lovely white beaches hidden in the coves are just one reason why you should charter a boat and discover that amazing region. No wonder that in peak season the west coast of the island is really crowded, as everyone wants to experience sailing in these waters. The best time for sailing along Corsica is between May and October, as it is the sunny season. You may experience some unsettled weather at that time but those are not frequent situations. In winter sailing around west Corsica may not be pleasant because of the winter Mistrals. Sailors should remember that peak season starts in the mid-July and it lasts till the end of August. At that time the cruising areas in Corsica are simply over-crowded and it is sometimes hard to find the free marina space. Those who will travel in that region in July and August should book marine in advance or arrive very early. Where to sail? You may start you journey from Bastia, as you will charter a boat here without any problems. It is a very attractive place with rich history worth learning. The Old Port itself, also known as the Vieux Port, is interesting with the citadel above it and the defensive walls. You should also see the charming old town center and a market which is usually crowded and noisy but also quite fascinating. Unfortunately, it is often really hard to find a berth there. Another marina, St Florent is big but if it turns out that there is no free spaces, sailors can use quite good sheltered anchorages. It is a typical holiday town which has the old charm and some interesting places to visit. Of course, tourists love beautiful beaches near the town, but sailors should appreciate the nightlife of St Florent. In the evening everybody gets to the main square to eat out, meet with friends and relax. The next port every sailor must visit is Calvi, but in the peak season marina is extremely crowded, so it is recommended to arrive there early. Of course, it is not always possible but there are also buoys available, which are not overpriced. The city of Calvi is astonishing and it enchants sailors even from the sea, but when you get off the boat it turns out to be even more beautiful. Great history, gorgeous architecture, lovely beaches and plenty of restaurants and cafes are the things that will make you to love this town. Ajaccio is also a significant port, but as well as other spots it can be very crowded in the peak season, so you may want to choose the anchorage off the town. The city is very beautiful and one of the major attractions is the house of Napoleon Bonaparte. After some sightseeing you should also try some grilled fish which are delicious in that area. Bonifacio can be a great finish line for your journey. The city is extraordinary because of its exotic cliff-top setting. Of course, as most spots in this area the architecture and character of the city is very interesting, and people are really welcoming. The harbor is well sheltered and sailors can find there all they may need. |
